The NHL Discover It card offers the same purchase rewards as the standard Discover It card with the same cash back match after the first year. But, if you’re a hockey fan and want to show your support for your team, this card can allow you to carry your team logo on your card. You’ll show your team loyalty every time you open your wallet to make a purchase.

While it would be nice for the card to offer a welcome bonus, the 0% APR and the cash back match after the first year should more than make up for it.

So, if you want to pay down a card balance or are planning a large purchase and want to double up on your rewards, this card could be a good option for you. Just be prepared for remembering to activate the bonus categories each quarter or you could miss out on the extra cash back!

Can I get pre-approved?

Unfortunately, Discover does not offer pre approval on its website for the NHL Discover It card. However, Discover may periodically send out mailers or other promotional material offering select customers pre approval for this or other Discover cards.

How do I redeem rewards?

One of the attractive features of the Discover It card is its ease of redemption for rewards. The redemption options are straightforward with a choice of statement credit towards your credit card balance, purchases on Amazon.com or as a deposit into your linked checking or savings account. You can initiate the redemption of your rewards by logging into your account and selecting your preferred redemption method.

How hard is it to get a NHL Discover It card?

The main requirement for the NHL Discover It card is good to excellent credit and there are no other hoops you’ll need to jump through. So, if you have decent credit, you should not have any real difficulty qualifying for this card.

Pros and Cons

Similar to all other credit cards, the NHL Discover It card comes with its own set of pros and cons

Pros
Cons
0% Introductory APR
Bonus Category Must Activation
Unlimited Cashback Match
Bonus Cash Back Maximums
NHL Team Logo
Rotating Categories
Freeze It

Although this card does not have a welcome bonus, you can enjoy a 0% introductory APR for 15 months on purchases and balance transfers . After that, the APR will be 16.99% – 27.99%.

This is a feature that is common to top Discover cards, but essentially, Discover will match all of the cash back you earn in your first year dollar for dollar. You’ll receive this as a cash back bonus automatically once you’ve completed your first year of card membership.

During the application process, you have the opportunity to select the logo of any of the 32 NHL teams to be featured on the front face of your card.

This feature essentially allows you to turn your card on and off as and when required. If you misplace your card, you can freeze it, which will prevent any new purchases, balance transfers and cash advances in a matter of seconds. This feature is available on the Discover website and mobile app.

While earning up to 5% cash back is possible, it is only available in predetermined categories each quarter.

To benefit from this cash-back bonus, you need to remember to activate the bonus category.

In addition to the bonus categories being predetermined, they also have a maximum quarterly spend. This is typically $1,500 and if you exceed this amount, any sum over and above the cap will only earn the regular 1% cash back.

So, if you are planning a large purchase, you may not be able to maximize your cash back.

Rotating categories may not suit everyone's preferences. Some individuals prefer certainty and have specific spending categories where they want to focus and maximize their returns.

Who is the NHL Discover It Credit Card Best For?

Since this is a co-branded credit card, it is obviously designed for NHL fans. Whether your team is in the Metropolitan, Atlantic, Central or Pacific Division, you can show your support with your Discover card. All 32 teams are featured and you can select which team you want to feature on your card with its team logo.

The card could also be a good choice if you are looking to pay down an existing credit card account or you are planning on making a large purchase. You’ll have quite long 0% intro APR, which could eliminate or minimize the interest charges you’ll pay.

Tips for the NHL Discover It Credit Card

This card is essentially a co-branded version of the standard Discover It card, but there are still a couple of tips that can help you to get the most value from it. These include:

Since you can only earn the 5% bonus cashback on specific categories in the various quarters of the year, it is a good idea to set an alert each quarter to remind you to activate the bonus.

Even if you’re not planning on making a major purchase, the bonus categories tend to relate to everyday spending, so there is the potential for a decent bonus.

Whether you’re using the app or the online platform, you can easily activate the privacy and security features. These are free services that increase your account and identity security.

FAQs

There are no official income requirements for the NHL Discover It card, but you do need to have good to excellent credit. This means that while your income will be assessed, it is not the only factor considered when an approval decision is being made.

This card is not a good idea if you don’t like the idea of needing to remember to activate bonus categories each quarter. If you prefer a more straightforward rewards structure, you may prefer a card that has a flat rewards rate.

Although this may appear to offer lower rewards, you won’t need to worry about categories, as all your purchases will attract the same reward rate.

Unfortunately, the NHL Discover It card does not offer travel insurance regardless of whether you’ve purchased your fare using your card.

Credit Card Reviews Methodology

In order to determine the best possible credit cards, we look at things like fees, interest rates and rewards. We do this with companies that are associated with us as partners as well as other offerings. From there, we make a decision about what the best card is related to different categories and needs. We focus on interest rate cost & fees, especially the cost of carrying a balance, rewards – cards accumulate rewards in different currencies—points, miles, cash back—and their values vary widely usability – cards that accept a wide range of credit profiles and offer simple solutions for things like checking your credit score or contacting. We also consider customer reviews.

We look at cards related to good or excellent credit ratings that will then provide a range of different benefits and improvements for someone who has these scores. We also look at low fees when it comes to those who have lower credit scores.
